Tortoise & Hare NYC

The Bronx, NY

"Can You Dig It?"

The purpose of this website is to help find places to have a drink and food AFTER the run, but what if I told you that the Tortoise and Hare in The Bronx is a place where you start a run.  What would you say then?

Well, that's what I am going to do.

Late in the evening of July 22, 2023, more than one hundred runners, walkers, and boppers walked into the bar dressed as gang members from the classic film "The Warriors".  The purpose of this was to recreate the overnight escape of the titular Warriors from Van Cortlandt Park to the Coney Island Boardwalk.  Yes, it is The Warriors Ultra.

Anyway, back to the write-up.

The food looked great.  The drinks looked great.  I was sticking to non alcoholic beer because I was going to run later but everyone looked to enjoy what they were having.  The service was quick and kind.  The best type of service when you are feeling the race jitters.

Let's talk more about the staff for a moment:

THEY WERE AWESOME! It was just so cool to have an establishment that wants you there.  One of the rules of this project is no bad vibes and no bashing of other places BUT some places seem annoyed when a group of runners show up, even if it was planned that we were going to be there.  (Regardless of the health aspects, runners, on average, drink more than "normies" and we can run up bar tabs. There is even a Runners World article about it.) But not here.  THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN and a large part of it was the great staff.

This is a place that you should go to.  The park is across the street and is famous for having one of the best Cross Country courses in the country. There is ample street parking.  The food looks great and plentiful. There is some outdoor seating. There were non-alcoholic options.  I do not know about the doggos.

Go HERE!  Tip Well!  Have fun!

My race write up will be over on ewabbott.com soon.
