The Olde English Pub & Pantry

Albany, NY

In one of the other entries, there is a discussion of the history of Albany, New York and how it has a LOT of history. When discussing places in Albany with history, the building that house The Olde English has to be in the conversation. Located in Quackenbush Square, in the Quackenbush House, it was built in the 1730s. Yes, the pub is in a building that isn't that far from being 300 years old.

You do not feel the weight of history though. Yes, there are traditional pub menu items, like Fish and Chips, which is a favorite of my son, as well as Bangers and Mash and the modern national dish of Britain, Chicken Tikka. However, there are also distinctly modern dishes, like the Kedgeree (pictured) which fills me with joy whenever I have it. The brunch menu and the specials feature fun and seasonal options. You will be able to find something delicious to eat here and you will be tempted to share with friends.

The libations are appear to be standard American English pub fare but they aren't. These are well thought out and there are often cans that surprise you. It is also one of the few places in the Albany area that routinely carries Athletic Brewing's Non-Alcoholic beers, which is always great to see.

When the back area is open, and hopefully that is soon, it is delightful. It is a garden in the heart of the city. I love it. The front seating is nice. It is a little exposed to the the foot traffic on Broadway as well as the actual traffic on Broadway. However, I have finished a run and felt perfectly comfortable sitting out front having a beer and some eating some of the dipping fries and fried Brussels. Now with the Albany Skyway, you can easily go from the Empire State Trail to The Olde English and back again without having to worry about surface roads.

Paid parking is available in a municipal lot adjacent to Quackenbush Square. Well behaved children are common. I do not know about the doggos. If it is a concern, you may want to give a call.

Biking or running down the Watervliet/Albany Bike trail? Hop on the Albany Skyway and Escape to this enchanting garden for a dram of whisky or a pint of beer. Hidden under the umbrella of towering trees is a garden tucked behind The Olde English Pub on Broadway in Albany, there is an outdoor bar with great music playing. The menu is small but includes delicious British bites. This garden is kid and pup friendly. If you’re arriving by car it’s street parking only.
